Antique 1700's Sheldon Cook Cast Iron Kettle
Up for your consideration is this fairly rare antique Sheldon Cook cast iron kettle. I very rarely use the word "rare" in a description, but it definitely applies here. Sheldon Cook was a foundry operator who made cookware in the New England area. There is one other similar kettle that is currently in a Museum at "Sturbridge Village" in Massachusetts. The kettle typifies the classic design of kettles of the late 18th century, complete with a wrought iron handle. There are two condition issues with this kettle. There is a crack as seen in the pictures that goes all the way through. It appears it was repaired many years ago , as there is evidence of some type of patch on the inside. Also there is a chip out of the top edge of the opening as seen in the pictures. It may be because of the crack that this kettle never got used enough to warrant its overall good condition.

There is some surface rust over the entire piece, nothing of which caused any heavy pitting typical of a pot this age. What's amazing is the hand wrought chain that holds the lid on is still intact after all these years. The lid and kettle are embossed with the makers initials "SC" along with a design of which I'm not sure of.

The kettle was manufactured using a mold design as seen by the strong seam lines on the kettle. The three small legs are still intact. Overall dimensions of this pot is 7&1/2" tall (not counting the handle), and 8" in diameter. All sales are final unless there is a error in the listing.
