ANTIQUE CAST IRON 18 GAL 61 LB 3 FOOT "BALTIMORE" CAMPFIRE GYPSY KETTLE CAULDRON. 16 Total Pictures for your viewing... Use Scroll Bar above, and selct image... POT BELLY GYPSY CAULDRON / KETTLE.

UNIQUE GATE MARK CASTING (See Below). Embossing Marked on Both Body Sides.

"18 BALTIMORE" On One Side Good Legibility and Embellished in Gold for Effect. "18 GALLON" On Other Side Slightly Legible, but left as is. This is a true antique piece from preceding (1890) which has been obviously used in cooking, but is in excellent condition for it's age. Has a great Rustic Character. Fully intact with no cracks or repairs.

It weighs nearly 61 lbs, which is extremely heavy for this size (a very old casting). Very Rare & Superb Quality from the period. You never see an 18 Gallon Size such as this come up.

A lot of history here. 100% Original and has a near perfectly clean & well maintained Inside. Original roughness from the sand mold used in the casting, as is visible in all old technology. Only 3 tiny casting flaws, which are air bubbles original to the casting. Very miniscule surface pitting sporadically, which has been cleaned, oiled and ready for use if you so desire (see pictures), Outside had natural slight age pitting from being left un-covered, but the surface has been taken down to nearly it's original surface, and then cleaned and painted with High Heat 1200 degree enamel. Full of Original Rustic Character, just see the pictures. A very unique aspect of this design, which lends to its age credibility... Is the Gate Mark Casting indentation, which obviously is very pronounced (the slot in the belly mold where liquid iron is poured thru). This was caused from pouring the liquid iron too quickly into the Gate (slot) which caused an indentation in the inner sand mold. After the cast cured, it was ground a bit for appearance, but...

You can see it's remnant in the picture of the bottom. The wall of this casting is very thick, hence it's heavy weight. It has a vey nice pronounced rim flare of 2" from it's pot belly, and the flat rim edge is a nice 1/2" or plus in some areas. In restoring this cauldron; since it had the wording "18 BALTIMORE" on one side, which had a decent embossing and actually was a plaqard placed in the sand mold prior to pouring, I decided to embellish that side only with gold over the letters. Easily removed if you don't want it, but I think it is a nice touch.

The other side, has another embossing, with "18 GALLON" showing, which I did not embellish. This Cauldron sits perfectly flat on the ground... And maintains a decent space above the floor surface. Most kettles that sit above the ground with even a little space between the bottom and a floor in any case, are too close to the ground to place a fire under them anyway, and always require bricks, etc... Or suspension on 3 legged mount or a 1/4" or 5/16" curved hooked hanger hung from a tripod, if you are going to use them over a fire.

If you are going to just display it, then it is perfectly horizontal and has NO WOBBLE either. If you want to use it over a fire, it can be placed right upon an open fire... Or to hang it above, any welder in your area will sell you a steel rod, which they can bend to your requirements in moments, and they are very inexpensive. And for complete cauldrons as well, will make you realize this offering is a bargain. THIS WONDERFUL OLD KETTLE FEATURES POT BELLY CASTING WITH 2 CONCENTRIC RIBS AROUND IT.

TWO ANGULAR "L" HANDLES, ONE ON EACH SIDE FOR HANGING. 3 FOOTED TRIANGULAR LEGS (SEE PHOTO) You can see the space underneath as it sits flat on the floor, with a nice clear space also. MEASURES APP: 20 1/2" DIAMETER (NOT INCLUDING HANDLES), X 15 1/8" TALL. Actual width across the widest section of its belly is 22. Inside Depth is 14 1/4" WIDE RIM FLARE: 2" RIM TOP EDGE 1/2 PLUS.

WEIGHS 61 LBS - 2 Oz. Marked with "118 BALTIMORE" - 18 GALLON. CONDITION IS FANTASTIC, ESPECIALLY FOR ITS ANTIQUE AGE! I DO NOT (As some other sellers do)... BELIEVE IN CLEANING UP OR MAKING SOMETHING THIS OLD LOOK LIKE IT IS NEW.

IT LOOKS EXACTLY AS ALL OLD RUSTIC CAST IRON SHOULD. THERE ARE NO HOLES OR RUST THROUGHS ANYWHERE.

TRULY IN GREAT SHAPE, ESPECIALLY FOR BEING TURN OF THE CENTURY CAST IRON. SPECIALLY PACKAGED (I USE FOAM SHEETS TO STRENGTHEN THE CARTON INSIDE AND FILLER ALL AROUND, AS WELL AS NYLON STRING WRAPPED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CARTON, ALL SIDES).
