From a Time When Breakfast Began With Building a Fire. Picture a kitchen before sunrise: kindling catches beneath an iron cookstove, coffee begins to warm, and a shallow griddle waits for the first spoonful of batter. Outside, a horse stamps in the cold. Inside, breakfast depends on good iron, a practiced hand, and knowing when the fire is ready. This antique griddle brings that world wonderfully close. Thin and light for cast iron, with a broad cooking surface and an elongated open handle, it has an appealing simplicity. It invites thoughts of provisions packed for a journey and cookware lashed beside a saddlebag-an evocative image, although its actual history of ownership and use is unknown. Estimated Date & Early Construction. The exact foundry and year of manufacture are unknown.

The underside retains a prominent gate mark, the raised casting scar left where excess iron was separated from the casting. A continuous, unbroken inset heat ring circles the bottom, while the long handle features an attractive, elongated hanging opening. These details give the piece considerable character: the underside preserves the evidence of its manufacture, while the shallow upper surface offers the straightforward practicality of an old-fashioned round griddle.

Thin, Light & Beautifully Proportioned. The low rim and broad surface make this a griddle rather than a deep frying skillet-a form well suited to pancakes, griddle cakes, and other foods turned with a spatula. Its relatively thin, light casting is an especially appealing feature.

Despite measuring over eleven inches across, it has a graceful profile and an airy open handle that complements the simple circular pan. A handsome piece for an early iron collection, a country kitchen, or someone who appreciates using restored antique cookware. Restored, stripped of its old buildup, and well seasoned.

Very faint wobble: one business card placed beneath the low point remedies the movement during a flat-surface check. Some faint cosmetic pitting on the underside. Original gate mark and continuous inset ring remain clearly visible. Thin and light for cast iron; exact weight has not been recorded. The crescent-shaped lines are disclosed as part of the casting's condition.

Suitable for gas or conventional electric cooking, allowing for the slight wobble described above. Not offered as suitable for induction. Pan width: 11 3/8 inches. Height: slightly over 1/2 inch.

Old Iron With Plenty of Character. The appeal is in the details: the slender casting, the long open handle, the uninterrupted bottom ring, and the gate scar preserved beneath it. Restored and seasoned, this is a tangible connection to the kitchens and foundry work of the nineteenth century. Please review all photographs as part of the description and condition disclosure.
